Goals and Objectives of the Computer and Information Studies Program

General goals:
   The Computer and Information Studies degree program at Salem State College is intended to:

  • PG1:  provide students with a broad background in the major subdisciplines of Computer Science;
     
  • PG2:  provide students with an in-depth understanding of computer software and the techniques for the design, implementation, maintenance, and uses of software;
     
  • PG3:  prepare students to communicate effectively and work cooperatively with others in the field and with clients seeking computer services;
     
  • PG4:  prepare students to undertake and profit from further study in the computer field, whether through self-study, specialized training courses, or graduate-level course work.

Specific student objectives:
   Upon completion of the Computer and Information Studies degree program, a graduate should be able to:
  • PO1:  demonstrate a knowledge of, and ability to use, current terminology, concepts, and technology in the computer field;
     
  • PO2:  analyze a problem, design and defend potential solutions to the problem, and implement and verify a solution, using state-of-practice techniques at each stage;
     
  • PO3:  generate appropriate documentation for a problem and its solution;
     
  • PO4:  present in written and oral form a discussion of the problem and solution;
     
  • PO5:  present in written and oral form a proposal for an independent or group project, and give a formal presentation of the completed project;
     
  • PO6:  demonstrate an awareness of the interdisciplinary connections of computer science;
     
  • PO7:  demonstrate an awareness of the ethical and societal issues relating to the impact of computers in society.
     
  • PO8:  demonstrate an understanding of relevant areas of mathematics, including discrete structures, probability and statistics, and elementary calculus, and applications of these areas to Computer Science.
   In addition:
  • PO9:  A majority of program graduates will find employment in high-technology companies in positions that make use of the graduates' Computer Science education.
     
  • P10:  Strong graduates from the program will be prepared to enter graduate programs in Computer Science.
