Computer Science Laboratories
Updated: 27 June 2003
The Computer Science Department maintains two laboratories
for student use.
The CSFleet Laboratory
The CSFleet Laboratory
(Meier Hall 205) contains 26 networked PCs, each with a 2.2 GHz Pentium 4 processor, 1 GB RAM,
two 40GB hard drives, 21" monitor, SoundBlaster Live card, CD-RW drive, and wheel mouse. The
machines run Windows XP Professional, with Office 2000 (MS Word, Excel, and Access), SPSS,
MiniTab, Visio (a graphics package), Execmail (mail applications), Netscape Navigator,
Internet Explorer, Oracle 9, and compilers for Java, C, Microsoft Visual Studio 6.0
(C, Visual C++, Visual Basic), Fortran90, ObjectAda 95, and a variable assortment of other
special-purpose programming languages. One of the PCs has a scanner attached.
Printing is handled by an HP5000N LaserJet printer.
All use of the CSFleet LAN is password-restricted to students enrolled
in Computer Science courses. For certain time periods during Fall and Spring semesters,
the Laboratory is used on a scheduled basis to support specific courses. At other times
the laboratory operates on a walk-in basis, but is still restricted to students enrolled in
Computer Science courses. The CSFleet LAN Laboratory is normally available approximately
60 hours per week, with additional hours during periods of peak usage.
The Metamorphic Laboratory
The Computer Science Department's Metamorphic Laboratory (Meier Hall 203;
entrance through Meier Hall 205) supports various laboratory configurations needed in advanced
courses, and the use of this laboratory is restricted to students in these upper-level courses.
The Metamorphic Laboratory currently includes two servers, Kafka and Oracle.
Kafka is a dual processor Pentium-based machine supporting Linux
and Windows NT, used for upper-level courses such as those included in the
Computer Systems, Embedded Systems, and Parallel Computing options
and related project work. Kafka is associated with a LAN of 486 and Pentium PC
workstations, providing students an opportunity to develop hands-on networking skills.
It also controls a fast crossbar switch, creating a high-performance cluster of PCs for
hands-on experience in parallel computing applications.
Oracle is an Oracle database server, used primarily by the Information
Systems option courses and related project work.
Both Kafka and Oracle are also accessible from the workstations on the
Packet LAN network, making the entire laboratory a highly versatile resource.
Laboratory Hours
The hours of availability for the laboratory change from time to time.
Current hours are posted on the outer door of Meier Hall 205. For up to date information,
please call the Computer Science Department office at (978) 542-6256 or the Laboratory itself
at (978) 542-7060. For other information about the Laboratory, or to enquire about "lab
attendant" jobs, consult Prof. Sheila Shea (MH 201A, 542-7092).
