The Thomas G. Lathrop Awards

The Thomas G. Lathrop Awards for Excellence in Mathematics and Computer Science were established jointly by the Mathematics and Computer Science Departments at Salem State College, in honor of Professor Thomas G. Lathrop of the Mathematics Department. Professor Lathrop, who died in November 1978, was active in teaching computer courses and in the establishment of the first Computer Science Laboratory at Salem State College. The award has been presented annually since 1980 to at least one Mathematics major and one Computer Science major.

The first Lathrop Award ceremony took place on Monday, May 5, 1980. The award recipients were Den J. Set, a Mathematics major and Computer Studies minor, and Philip Callahan, a Bachelor of General Studies graduate whose course of study combined concentrations in Art and Computer Science.

Award Recipients

AY 2016-2017

The 2017 presentation of the Thomas G. Lathrop Awards was held on Monday, April 24 at 11:00 in MH 238. The Computer Science recipient was Michael Ascenzi. Professor Komalpreet Kaur presented the award to the recipient. Mathematics recipients were Reibin Hiraldo, whose award was presented by Professor Christopher Yakes, and Samuel Koeut, whose award was presented by Professor Brian Travers.

AY 2015-2016

The 2016 presentation of the Thomas G. Lathrop Awards was held on Monday, May 2 at 11:00 in Sullivan 301. The Computer Science recipients were Andrew Bugler, Anthony Calabresi, and Auguste Compaore. Professors Sotirios Kentrosm, Beifang Yi, and Joe Kazprzyk presented the awards to the recipients. Mathematics recipients were Albert Florez, whose award was presented by Professor Pedro Poitevin, and Katyana Sheridan, whose award was presented by Professor Brian Travers.

AY 2014-2015

The 2015 presentation of the Thomas G. Lathrop Awards was held on Monday, April 27 at 11:00 in Sullivan 311. The Computer Science recipient was Charles Taft, whose award was presented by Professor Beifang Yi. Mathematics recipients were Jarrod Douglass, whose award was presented by Professor Kathi Crow, and Joseph Mackay, whose award was presented by Professor Brian Travers.

AY 2013-2014

The 2014 presentation of the Thomas G. Lathrop Awards was held on Monday, April 14 at 11:00 in Sullivan 311. The Computer Science recipient was Zakarya Fadili, whose award was presented by Professor Bo Hatfield. Mathematics recipients were Armen Gevorgyan, whose award was presented by Professor Brian Travers, and Benjamin Taylor, whose award was presented by Professor Kathi Crow.

AY 2012-2013

The 2013 presentation of the Thomas G. Lathrop Awards was held on Monday, April 29 at 11:00 in Sullivan 311. The Computer Science recipient was Amanda Welch, whose award was presented by Professor Bo Hatfield. Mathematics recipients were Ceara Somerville, whose award was presented by Professor Reva Kasman, and Richard Hennigan, whose award was presented by Joe Fox.

AY 2011-2012

The 2012 presentation of the Thomas G. Lathrop Awards was held on Monday, April 30 at 11:00 in Sullivan 311. The Computer Science recipient was Najir Pandey, whose award was presented by Professor Beifang Yi. Mathematics recipients was Kayla Bishop, whose award was presented by Professor Pedro Poitevin.

AY 2010-2011

The 2011 presentation of the Thomas G. Lathrop Awards was held on Monday, May 2 at 11:00 in Sullivan 311. The Computer Science recipient was Mark Rauseo, whose award was presented by Professor Charles Stevenson. Mathematics recipients were Rebecca Jacobs (award presented by Professor Reva Kasman) and Brandon Tries (award presented by Professor Joseph Fox).

AY 2009-2010

The 2010 presentation of the Thomas G. Lathrop Awards was held on Monday, April 26. The Computer Science recipients were seniors Benjamin D. Michaud and Celestino R. Morales, whose awards were presented by Professor Charles Stevenson. Mathematics recipient was Julie Klipfel (award presented by Professor Reva Kasman).

AY 2008-2009

The 2009 presentation of the Thomas G. Lathrop Awards was held on Monday, April 27. The Computer Science recipient was senior Nicholas G. Chenery, whose award was presented by Emeritus Professor Edward Wilkens. Mathematics recipients were Theresa Gilstrap (award presented by Professor Maura Murray) and Caitlin Phifer (award presented by Professor Brian Travers).

AY 2007-2008

The 2008 presentation of the Thomas G. Lathrop Awards was held on Monday, April 28. The Computer Science recipient was senior Alessandro Agnello, whose award was presented by Professor Ronald Klausewitz. Mathematics recipients were Philip Crotts (award presented by Professor L. Pedro Poitevin) and Loren Miller (award presented by Professor Joseph Fox).

AY 2006-2007

The Thomas G. Lathrop Award presentation for 2007 took place on Monday, April 30. The Computer Science recipient was senior Anthony M. Scotti, whose award was presented by Professor Miklhail Brikman. Mathematics recipients were Joshua Mansell (award presented by Pedro Poitevin), Jennifer Olson (award presented by Dr. Chris Boucher) and Kevin Thomas (award presented by Dr. Brian Travers).

AY 2005-2006

At the Thomas G. Lathrop Award presentation on May 1, 2006, awards were presented to Computer Science major Joseph Nganga (award presented by Professor Joseph Kasprzyk) and to Mathematics majors Daniel Kirkorian (presented by Professor Kenny Ching) and Misook Wood (presented by Professor Mary Platt).

AY 2004-2005

The Thomas G. Lathrop Award presentation for 2005 was held on Monday, May 2. The Computer Science recipient was CSC senior William M. Rieker (award presented by Professor Edward J. Wilkens). The Mathematics recipients were Jennifer Maher (award presented by Professor Christopher Boucher) and George Pitman (award presented by Professor Mary Platt)

AY 2003-2004.

The 2004 Thomas G. Lathrop Award presentation was held on Monday, April 26. The Computer Science recipients were CSC majors Christopher J. Newell (award presented by Professor Sheila Shea) and Jason A. Rowe (award presented by the CSC Department Chair, Professor Edward J. Wilkens).   One of the Mathematics recipients was S. John Seng, a double major in Mathematics and Computer Science, whose award was presented by Professor Chris Boucher. The other Mathematics recipient was Sarah C. Newcomb, whose award was presented by Professor Maura Murray.

AY 2002-2003

The 2003 Thomas G. Lathrop Award presentation was held on April 28. The Computer Science recipient was CSC major Nicholas Giarratani, whose award was presented by the CSC Department Chair, Professor Edward J. Wilkens.   The Mathematics recipients were Jessica Miller (award presented by Professor Maura Murray) and Victoria Richardson (award presented by Professor Mary L. Platt).

AY 2001-2002

The 2002 Computer Science recipient of the Thomas G. Lathrop Award was Computer Science major Joshua Dunn. The award was presented by Professor Joseph Kasprzyk of the Computer Science Department.   The Mathematics recipients for 2002 were Mark Funchion and Don Lac.

AY 2000-2001

At the awards ceremony held on Monday, April 30, 2001, CSC major Benjamin LeBlanc was the year's Computer Science recipient of the Thomas G. Lathrop Memorial Award.

AY 1999-2000

At the awards ceremony held on Monday, April 10, 2000, CSC major David Pabisz was the year's Computer Science recipient of the Thomas G. Lathrop Memorial Award. The year's Mathematics recipients were Laura Manning and Thierry Romain.

AY 1998-1999

At a ceremony on Monday, April 26, 1999, the Lathrop Award was presented to John Gagnon, a Computer and Information Studies major, and to Christopher Bonner, a Mathematics major and Computer Studies minor.

AY 1997-1998

The 1998 Lathrop Award ceremony was held on Monday, April 27. There were two Computer and Information Studies recipients, Alexei N. Terentiev and Joseph S. Kosofsky. Among other activities and achievements during his undergraduate career, Mr. Kosofsky set up the first version of the Computer Science Department's web site. The two Mathematics recipients for the year were James B. Sitomer and Michael E. Gilmore.

AY 1996-1997

The 1997 Lathrop Award ceremony was held on Monday, April 14. The Computer Science recipient was CSC major Laura Kerwin.   The Mathematics recipient was Maura Fitzgerald.
