The following information is a brief summary of the services currently being offered by Student Academic Support Services at Salem State College.

Tutoring Program

Student Academic Support Services (SASS) oversees the college-wide peer tutoring program.  The Tutoring Program is free to all full-time and part-time students attending Salem State College.  For more information, please contact Rhonda Mercier at 978.542.6213 or via email at rmercier@salemstate.edu.

Reading Lab

The Reading Lab is a student-centered environment that is designed to help with skill development, enhance comprehension levels, and fortify content area critical reading skills. The goal of the Lab is to provide academic support by engaging students in active reading comprehension strategies that allow them to gain and transfer meaning from text to the demands of college level tasks.  The Reading Lab also assists students who have not passed the reading competency requirement.  Students may walk-in or make an appointment between the hours of          9:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.  For more information, please contact Rebecca Dean at 978.542.6717 or via email at rdean@salemstate.edu.

Alternative Admissions Programs

SASS offers alternative admissions to students who do not meet the admission standards but have the potential and desire to succeed.  The programs service first-generation, low-income, and educationally disadvantaged students.  As part of their admission, students must participate in a six-week summer program.

Student Development Counseling

All students who successfully complete the summer program are assigned a student development counselor.  The student development counselor meets with each student on a regular basis and also provides group counseling.  Some of the counseling sessions include classroom etiquette, choosing a major or minor, and getting involved on campus.  We encourage faculty to contact our office to inform us of any concerns/problems facing our students.  Please contact Ashleyne Alexis at 978.542.8309.

Collaborations

SASS works closely with other offices including Counseling and Health Services, Academic Advising, Financial Aid, and the Registrar's Office.
